Calcium is a clear, yellowish liquid that, as an auxiliary dryer, has many applications in the paint, resin, ink, and other industries. This dryer has properties such as good diffusion and wetting properties, reduces the absorption of dryers by pigments.
What is calcium?
Calcium with the chemical formula [CH3 (CH2) 3CH (C2H5) COO] 2Ca and the molecular formula (C8H15O2) 2Ca and with a molecular mass of 326.49, is an important auxiliary dryer that acts as an octave with a cobalt dryer for deep resin drying. Alkyd air dryers are used and the film dries the paint deeply.
Use of calcium?
Calcium carboxylates are auxiliary dryers that enhance the activity of other dryers, especially dryers such as lead and zirconium. Calcium is the least toxic of metals and is commonly used in colors where lead is not recommended. In fact, part of the lead can be replaced with a lot of that to prevent lead loss and maintain drying efficiency.

Calcium dryers should be measured before use and used in trusted recipes to prevent overuse, but typically 0.02% to 0.3% calcium metal based on adhesive weight to Alkyd oil and paint are added. However, higher levels may be required if used as a wetting agent or as a deterrent.
It is also recommended that calcium be used in combination with cobalt at an approximate ratio (1: 1). Because they simultaneously improve by drying oil-based films.
Risks and harms of using ?
Calcium may irritate the skin and eyes. Therefore, being in too much contact with it will cause dizziness, drowsiness, headache, nausea and cracking or dry skin. Therefore, it is recommended to avoid direct contact with the skin. It’s also a good idea to wear safety goggles, protective clothing, and chemical-resistant rubber gloves when handling it, and then wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water.
