Benzalkonium, or alkyl chloride methyl benzyl ammonium, is a colorless, odorless ammonium compound that, due to its detergent properties (a kind of cationic surfactant), strong antimicrobial and antiseptic properties, has an effective function against a variety of bacteria and viruses. It dissolves slightly in water but is easily soluble in ethanol and acetone.

Benzalkonium application
Benzalkonium is widely used in hospitals and other health care for disinfection. For example, they are commonly used in household cleaning products such as detergents and kitchen and toilet surface cleaners. It is also a good alternative to triclosan as a new “antibacterial” agent in cosmetic, health and commercial soaps.
